The Irish National and Citizenship Act 2001 legislates for the process by which the spouses of Irish citizens may become naturalised and also for the calculation of the period of residence with regard to an application for naturalisation.
The Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act 2001 also gives effect to Article 1(vi) of the Good Friday Agreement. In that provision, both the British and Irish Governments recognise "the birthright of all the people of Northern Ireland to identify themselves and be accepted as Irish or British, or both, as they may so choose".
