CALL FOR EXPULSION OF SCULLY FROM FINE GAEL
Legislation on Racism Needed in Ireland

The Integration Centre is calling for the expulsion of Cllr Darren Scully, a member of Naas Town Council and the current Mayor of Naas, from Fine Gael after his racist comments today. (22/11/11)

Killian Forde, CEO of The Integration Centre said “My first reaction when I heard these comments was that he must have been misquoted. However, unbelievably Councillor Scully did say that he wouldn’t represent black Africans. This is truly idiotic.”

“An Taoiseach needs to provide very strong leadership here. This is one of the first itmes an Irish politician has so blatantly played the race card. He needs to be expelled. Fine Gael, as the governing party, need to make a very clear statement on behalf of the government on their attitude towards racism.”

“Enda Kenny needs to expel this man. “

“Ireland faces a number of challenges when it comes to racial discrimination. Firstly the body which used to monitor racism here, the NCCRI, was one of the first bodies cut in the recession – giving the clear message that this issue is of little importance in ireland.”

“Secondly, racism is not seen to be an aggravating factor in sentencing. The current legislation states that an incident is racist if it is seen to be subjectively by the victim. However, as it not taken into consideration in sentencing it is impossible to know the extent of the problem in Ireland.”
