Opportunity for migrant integration in the Education System

Press Release 04/10/11
New Boards of Management will take up office from 1 December 2011. The Integration Centre calls on the immigrant population to put themselves forward, and ensure that this demographic of over 10 per cent of the population is represented in the management of their children’s education.
Killian Forde, CEO of The Integration Centre, said “These elections offer an exciting opportunity for migrants to be more integrated into the education system. One of the key pillars of integration is education. With this in mind we have appointed a liaison officer to assist migrants with information and advice in relation to these elections. Peter Szlova,k Head of Research and Policy, is available at 01-6453070."
Our National Primary School system is one hundred and eighty years old, with Boards of Management, including elected parent representatives, introduced in 1975.
“This tradition of education is something to be proud of, however, as with other facets of life new ideas and the ability to adapt to modern times is crucial to success.”
“Integration is a two-way process, and it is as important for immigrants to participate in and contribute to society as it is for the native community to embrace new neighbours and work alongside them for the betterment of the children which will shape Ireland’s future.”
“Active Citizenship takes many forms and the voice of New Communities needs to be heard at management level. Boards of Management are highly influential in the running processes of schools therefore it is possible to make a real difference in this role.”
“The Irish school system appears to be on the precipice of a major transformation, it is important that we all work together to ensure it is a positive one.”
