The increasing number of migrant candidates at the forthcoming local elections is a sign of their commitment to the socio-political development of Ireland.
Josephine Ahern, the Director of the Refugee Information Service (RIS) also said it was time that we acknowledged the positive contribution of migrants including those who have secured party representation at the forthcoming elections.
‘The time when migrants are seen as a problem is over, their contribution is evident in many fields ‘, she said.
According to Ms. Ahern, political participation is a vital step towards integration, and more migrant candidates should be encouraged to contribute their expertise and experience and to engage with their civic responsibilities.
Ms. Ahern later encouraged migrants including refugees and asylum seekers to register to vote at the forthcoming elections next month so that their views heard especially on matters affecting them.
The Refugee Information Service (RIS) specialises in the areas of international protection and the integration of migrants in Ireland. It provides specialist information, advice, advocacy and referral services for people who seek asylum and refugee status in Ireland.
Operational since 1998, the RIS works with individuals and families, and with government, private sector, international and other non-government agencies to ensure that once a person has refugee status, they are able to access their legal rights and entitlements, including reunification with their families.
The RIS also provides a nationwide training service and conducts research to influence policy and legislation.
